On a first visit to a soapland, you may wonder what is acceptable or worry about unknowingly breaking a rule. This article explains the conduct Chocolat asks guests to observe, following the current official guidance. You do not need to memorise a complicated set of rules. The essentials are to arrive clean, respect the wishes of the person providing the service and the establishment’s instructions, and ask first whenever you are unsure.
Update recorded in the Japanese article: 12 September 2026
Chocolat published an official manners guide setting out the current establishment policy. The Japanese article was also reviewed against that guidance.

Please arrive clean
Bathe before your visit and take care of your grooming, including your nails. Meeting in a clean condition is a basic consideration that helps both the guest and the person providing the service feel comfortable at the start. If you have any concerns about preparation, tell staff on arrival.
Unwanted acts, unreasonable demands and rough behaviour are not permitted
If you would like to request something, ask the person providing the service before doing it. Acts she does not want, unreasonable demands and rough behaviour are not permitted. If she expresses unease or refusal, do not continue.
No photography, filming or audio recording
Taking photographs or videos inside the establishment or in the rooms is not permitted, regardless of whether permission has been given. Recording conversations or audio during the service on a device is also prohibited. This applies even to “just a little” or “as a souvenir”.
Do not ask for personal information
Do not ask for identifying information such as a real name, age or home address. Respect the person’s privacy so that everyone can spend their time without feeling unsafe.
No exchange of private contact details
Guests and the people providing the service may not exchange private contact details, including telephone numbers or personal social-media accounts. Please use the establishment’s official channels for enquiries and reservations.
If unsure, stop and ask first
If you are unsure about the service, how to proceed or whether a request is acceptable, do not act on your own assumption. Stop and check with the person providing the service or with staff. Not proceeding while something remains unclear is an important part of considerate conduct.
Check the official manners guide for current guidance
Chocolat publishes its requests to guests as establishment-wide guidance so that the people providing the service and guests can feel safe. Staff will help if you are unsure or have a problem.
