Use several photos, profile text, available videos and recent information together, rather than relying on a single image.

If you are looking into Yoshiwara for the first time, you may worry that a photograph will give a different impression from meeting someone in person.

You do not have to decide from one profile photograph. Looking through several photos, the introduction, official videos and current attendance information in turn can help build a clearer impression before meeting.

Online, the gap between a photograph and an in-person impression is sometimes called panemaji. Lighting, make-up, hairstyle and the date of a shoot can also change how a photograph looks. Rather than judging a person from a photo alone, consult several kinds of officially published information.

Five kinds of information to check

Photos → profile → official videos → attendance information → questions to staff.

Going through these in order can reduce concern about having relied on a photograph alone. The point is to build on each source instead of deciding from only one.

1. Look at several profile photos

The first photograph is only a starting point. Front-facing photos, smiles, side views, full-length images and different outfits or hairstyles gradually give a more rounded impression.

Rather than comparing facial features in minute detail, look for aspects you feel comfortable with, such as a friendly smile or a calm manner. You can take time to compare profiles in the official Chocolat profile list (Japanese).

2. Look at official videos as well as photographs

Videos can show changing expressions and movement that still photos do not convey. Where a video has audio, it may also let you hear the person’s way of speaking and voice. Even a short viewing can help you consider whether the impression matches what you imagined from the photos.

Published videos are available on official Chocolat MOVIE (English interface; original audio). Where a person has a video, view it alongside her photographs. The availability of audio depends on the individual video.

3. Read the profile and introduction, not only the photographs

When meeting someone for the first time, manner and personality matter as well as appearance. Profiles and introductions may describe conversational style, preferred ways of spending time and approachability that photographs cannot convey.

Reading with your own preferences in mind, such as wanting to talk or to spend time quietly, can help you think about compatibility. The official guide on reading profiles and choosing someone suited to you (Japanese) also discusses the process.

4. Consult current attendance information and official social media

Hair and appearance may have changed since profile photographs were taken. If recent photos, videos or official social-media posts are available through a profile, consider them alongside the latest attendance information.

Schedules can change. Check current information through the official profile list (Japanese) before a visit.

5. Ask staff if you are unsure

It is not unusual to remain unsure after checking. You can tell staff your preferences, such as someone cheerful and easy to talk to, or a quieter atmosphere.

If you do not know what to say on a first visit, it is fine to say that it is your first time. You do not need to decide alone: ask the questions important to you before considering your choice.

A sequence for checking information

  1. Look at several photographs in the official profile list (Japanese).
  2. Read the profile and introduction.
  3. Use official Chocolat MOVIE (English interface; original audio) to see expressions; speech can be checked where audio is available.
  4. Check current attendance information.
  5. Ask staff about anything still unclear.

If you are new to Yoshiwara, the official first-visit information (Japanese) also explains the general process before arrival.

You do not have to decide while unsure

Ask staff about any concerns before visiting.

Frequently asked questions

Can photographs and an in-person impression differ?

Yes. Lighting, make-up, hairstyle and the date of a shoot may produce a different impression on the day. Consult several photos, videos, profile text and recent information together rather than deciding from a single photograph.

Is a video alone enough?

A video is useful for understanding someone’s manner, but profiles, introductions and current attendance information also help you consider your choice.

Can a first-time visitor ask staff?

Yes. Your preferences do not need to be fully formed. Tell staff what concerns you or what you are unsure about.
